It began in 1791 at a small mill on the banks
of the Schuylkill River in the Manayunk manufacturing district of Philadelphia, Pa. For over 215 years, the American carpet industry continues to evolve.

The Oldest Carpet Company
Mohawk Industries, Inc. is the oldest American carpet company still in continuous manufacturing. With roots dating back to the establishment of the Medway Carpet Company in 1825, the impressive growth and history of the Mohawk "family of brands," is a walk through American history. Under the corporate umbrella of Mohawk Industries, Inc., the oldest brands in the carpet industry still bear the quality names and flooring products that have passed the test of time. Medway Carpet Co., Lowell Manufacturing Co., Clinton Co., H.N. & E.B. Bigelow Co., James Lees and Sons, Hartford Carpet Co., Sanford Carpet Co., Shuttleworth Brothers Co., Mohasco, Mohawk Carpet Mills, Alexander Smith, and Karastan are together as one company.
The Man Behind the Carpet
It is rare in industry for one man to have played such a pivotal roll in the establishment of that industry. Erastus Brigham Bigelow was such a man. Born in 1814, the second son of a cotton mill owner, Erastus's inquisitive young apprentice mind looked at the process of making textile products from a different point of view. Erastus understood that the key to successful business was quality and cost. Prior to Erastus Bigelow's power loom invention, every carpet loom was operated by hand or foot power. Erastus Bigelow's power loom made it possible for carpets to be mass-produced. It was his invention in 1837, which ultimately revolutionized the entire American textile industry.

Building for the Future
The commitment of Mohawk Industries to the legacy of the past, is a firm foundation from which to build product designs for the present and future generations.
